A Return to San Jose del Cabo: Then and Now
Back in June of 2015, we took a long weekend to celebrate 13 years of love and adventure. Normally, we’d stay home, make a nice dinner, and reminisce—but that year felt different. There was a hotel in San Jose del Cabo we’d been eyeing, flights were quick and affordable from the Bay Area, and we were craving real Mexican food and good margaritas. So, we booked it.
We’re not your typical tourists. Mega-resorts aren’t our thing—we prefer wandering off the beaten path, soaking in local culture, and spending our money where it matters. That’s why we chose San Jose del Cabo over Cabo San Lucas.
Why San Jose del Cabo?
San Jose is the quieter, more historic cousin to party-loving Cabo. While Cabo draws crowds with nightlife and all-inclusive resorts, San Jose feels like stepping into a charming colonial village—dusty cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, horses meandering by, and the warmest smiles from locals. It’s a little rustic, refreshingly low-key, and full of hidden gems.
After the hurricane hit in 2014, the town began to rebuild with renewed spirit. Today, San Jose is gaining recognition for its vibrant art scene, farm-to-table food, and boutique accommodations. We were smitten during our first visit—and again when we returned in 2022.
Getting There
We flew Alaska Airlines, which offered a convenient non-stop flight from San Francisco to the Cabo airport. From the airport it is about a 45 minute drive to San Jose del Cabo, and about 60 minutes to Cabo Beach Resorts, depending on traffic. In 2022, the traffic has increased a lot compared to 2015.
Transportation – To Drive or Not to Drive?
Do you need a car?
For both trips, we skipped the rental. Since we planned to lounge, eat, and explore within the walkable city center, we opted for easy transfers instead.
EcoBaja Tours: Used on our first trip. Professional, clean, air-conditioned, and about $22 round trip.
Private driver via Drift Hotel: For our 2022 visit. Friendly, reliable, and arranged directly through the hotel.
Sleeping
We typically rent apartments when traveling, but The Drift Hotel called to us. It's a concept hotel built for the independent, adventurous traveler. Minimalist rooms with concrete walls, exposed piping, and touches like hammocks or art. Ours had a sexy open shower and wide windows that welcomed in the warm night air. Definitely a couples spot - not sure I would want to share a room with my sister or kids (if I had them).
Highlights:
Communal kitchen (great for chatting over coffee or OJ)
Small but perfect pool for hot afternoons
Rooftop deck for reading and sunning
On-site bar serving mezcal, beer, and great cocktails
A relaxed, friendly vibe that makes it easy to feel at home
We’ll be back. No doubt.
Activities
Pool time – Yes, it counts as an activity. While the pool is small at The Drift Hotel, it completely satisfies our pool time.
Art Walk – Held Thursday evenings in the Gallery District. A must-do for local art, music, and street eats.
Shopping
Shima Shima: Gorgeous handwoven blankets
Choya Rose: Handicrafts and woven goods (great gifts!)
Patricia Mendoza Gallery: Stunning art with a hidden garden bar
Cocktails
Mezcal Bar at Drift: Excellent classic margaritas and a killer Oaxaca Old Fashioned. In 2022 we were pleasantly surprised to see that they now offer food as well. Great spot for lunch time tacos by the pool and their breakfasts with fresh juices are fantastic. Lovely staff!
Patricia Mendoza Gallery: Who knew they had Palomas in the garden while looking at art.
Nomada Bar de Origen: Found during the Art Walk—outdoor seating, live music, and a cult following. They also served Argentina empanadas if you want a little something to nibble on with your margarita.
Dalton Gin Bar: Trendy rooftop with sunset views—go early for a quieter vibe, it turns into a club later in the evening.
Where to Eat
Breakfast & Coffee
Lolita Café – Not traditional Mexican food, but amazing breakfast. Baked eggs, bold sauces, and surprisingly good coffee. Ask for the spicy chili sauce - it is a secret worth knowing about.
Pezgallo – Pretty space, modern feel, and brunch looked delicious (we had just eaten at Drift)
Coffee Lab - Chic co-working space with modern coffee drinks
Lunch & Dinner
La Lupita – We went twice. Innovative tacos, unforgettable sauces, and a deep drink menu. The sauces that are served alongside the appetizers as well as the tacos are amazing, and nothing like what we have at home; lots of smokey peppers as well as a guacamole that is more on the loose side with an abundance of flavor. The drink menu goes beyond beer and margaritas with interesting cocktails using an assorment of alcohol. Be sure to check out the Mezcal tasting as well - it was informative and a fun addition to dinner. Update 2022 - you need a reservation now. This spot has been found out.
Moriscos El Chino – Found this ceviche hidden gem on the last day. Mom-and-pop vibes! The fish was incredibly fresh, seasoned perfectly and the portions are huge. Again, these crazy good sauces were served. We were in seafood heaven! The service is hospitable, warm and they made use feel like we were in their home kitchen.
Jazmine – Where the locals send you. Giant portions, fresh ingredients, live music, and some of the best chile rellenos and homemade tortillas we’ve had.
La Osteria – Chic but casual, great for afternoon margaritas (which were delicious). Menu looks excellent—we’ll go back for dinner next time.
Next Time
Day Trips
We’re definitely renting a car on our next visit. Here’s what’s on our list:
Balandra Beach – Often called the most beautiful beach in the region (crystal clear water, dreamy sand)
Cañon de la Zorra & Sol de Mayo Waterfall – Hike into a desert oasis and cool off under a 40-foot waterfall near Santiago
Eating
The Drunken Sailor – Marina spot in La Playita for fish tacos and icy beer
Flora Farm – Couldn’t get a reservation, but it’s high on our brunch list
H Restaurant – A splurge spot (think ), but looks like a cozy and delicious fine dining experience
If you’re looking for a laid-back, food-loving, art-filled escape, San Jose del Cabo delivers. It’s everything we love in a vacation: charm, flavor, and just the right amount of adventure.
